Curriculum Developer: Request for Proposals

About DC Youth Moving Forward 

DC Youth Moving Forward is a program housed and sponsored by DC Alliance of Youth Advocates (DCAYA).  DCAYA is a coalition of youth-engaged organizations, youth and concerned residents formed to ensure that all children and youth in the District of Columbia have access to high-quality and affordable developmental opportunities. We accomplish this mission by crafting policy recommendation as it relates to  youth homelessness, workforce development, disconnected youth and out-of-school time programming. DC Youth Moving Forward, a youth advocacy and action leadership program was birthed to ensure that young people in DC have the advocacy and leadership tools necessary to organize in their very own communities and work with elected officials to influence policy change.  

Our participants include youth ages 14-24, with an intentional focus on amplifying the voices and experiences of youth from D.C’s under-resourced communities. 

Project Overview & Objective: 

DC Alliance of Youth Advocates (DCAYA) is seeking a Curriculum Developer with experience in curriculum design, youth development, and a deep understanding of community organizing that centers youth agency and leadership. In collaboration with DC AYA’s Director of Youth Programs, the Curriculum Developer will design lesson plans for DC Youth Moving Forward to assist our youth program participants with the following learning objectives: 

  • A deeper understanding & analysis on local issues that impact the youth’s community:
    • Gentrification, Gun Violence & Community Safety, Lack of Mental Health Support, Education Equality, Food Access, Immigration Issues, Racial Equity etc. 
  • Concrete advocacy tools in the areas of community engagement, project management advocacy ethics and systemic change. 
  • Concrete leadership skills and an understanding of how to exercise political agency

Project  Deliverables:

DC Youth Moving Forward convenes participants for eight months from October to early June. Sessions are held twice a week for two hours each session. Students meet for a total of four hours per week. The final deliverables for this project include: 

  1. A printed and digital copy of completed  curricula for the eight month program. This will consist of robust lesson plans for each program session. 
    •  16  Program Hours/ Per Month = Total of 120 hours of lesson plans
    • Each lesson plan should be written in a step-by-step instructional style to help the facilitator guide program participants through the activities of the day. 
  2. In  collaboration with DC AYA’s Director of Youth Programs, complete an interim presentation to DC AYA’s leadership team to report on progress and receive feedback. 
  3. Orient any other DC AYA staff that will be responsible to facilitate program curriculum after submission of the final deliverable for up to two hours. 

Period of Performance:

The project will commence upon selection of the Curriculum Developer, with the goal of starting no later than Monday, February 24th, 2020. The project will be considered completed upon submission of all final deliverables with a deadline of June 29th, 2020

Criteria for Selection:

  • Experience working with and designing curriculum for youth ages 14-24.
  • Experience working with and designing  leadership programs for black and brown communities. 
  • Expert knowledge and first hand experience in advocacy and  community organizing in DC preferred. Familiarity and experience working with DC’s elected officials and knowledge of the city’s legislative processes. 
  • Experience leading, coaching or training facilitators. 

Proposal Requirements:  

Please send a resume/c.v. and a brief proposal (no more than five  pages in length) to by Friday, December 20th

The proposal should include:

  •  A narrative explaining your qualifications, skills  and fit for the project
  •  A description of how you would approach the project, including a sample lesson plan that you have developed for a comparable objective. Some examples include: 
    • Intro to Advocacy 
    • Project Management for Youth 
    • Understanding Gentrification (or any other social issue) 
  • An estimated number of hours to complete the project and general availability during the period of performance
  • Submit a Breakdown of costs. Total budget for the project is between to $15,000 – $20,000
