DCAYA Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer

The DC Alliance of Youth Advocates (DCAYA) is seeking a qualified, strategic, and dynamic Executive Director (ED)/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead our small but mighty team of policy experts seeking to improve the lives of youth in the District of Columbia. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED/CEO will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for DCAYA’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of our mission to ensure that all children and youth in DC have access to high-quality and affordable developmental opportunities.

The Position

This position is designed for someone who:

  • Believes in the power of local policy advocacy to improve outcomes for DC’s children and youth, particularly youth of color who are regularly denied opportunities due to systemic racism.
  • Is excited by the opportunity to work with a large community of partners (staff, board, community members) to develop and work toward a bold vision for DC youth.
  • Is able to be decisive, even when there is limited information and/or time constraints.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Vision

  • Work with diverse partners to understand the challenges and opportunities facing DC children and youth.
  • Using this input, lead board and staff to develop and implement a new strategic plan that builds on current strengths and reflects future opportunities (organizational and programmatic).
  • Effectively communicate these goals and progress to external stakeholders (member organizations, funders, media, and policy makers).
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain DCAYA’s high-performance staff team to achieve policy and program objectives on behalf of DC youth.
  • Ensure effective partnerships with members and advocacy allies by supporting staff in identifying strategic partnerships/campaign alliances to align strategies and maximize our collective impact.

Fundraising & Communications

  • Increase annual revenue by 12% over the next two years by developing and implementing a development plan that focuses on:
    • 20% increase in individual and corporate donor support over the first two years by consistent donor prospecting and ongoing donor cultivation.
    • Securing 4 new foundation partners over two years; with a particular focus on prospecting and engaging national and regional funders.
  • Ensure successful renewals and gradual increases from longtime institutional donors (>10 local foundations) through consistent outreach/engagement and well written, timely grant applications and reports.
  • Annually revise fundraising language and messaging to ensure we effectively communicate our work and impact.
  • Expand DCAYA’s brand recognition by developing and implementing a communications strategy that balances development communications and policy/advocacy communications. This includes regular newsletters, social media content, donor specific communications, issue specific e-alerts, and external/media relations.

Organizational Management

  • Increase organizational capacity through strategic recruitment and hiring of, at minimum, 2 positions in FY20; effectively integrate these team members into DCAYA’s highly collaborative team environment.
  • Ensure robust engagement of the Board of Directors through ongoing board recruitment (with a focus on diversity), the development of annual goals/responsibilities for the board and board committees, and regular staffing/support to monitor and achieve these goals.
  • Ensure fiscal stability by working closely with the board and bookkeeper to manage and monitor all financials; complete an annual audit; and closely monitor funding trends and changes.

Qualifications

  • The ED/CEO will be thoroughly committed to DCAYA’s mission and have an unwavering commitment to advancing policy solutions that will improve the lives of youth in the District of Columbia. All candidates should have proven leadership and relationship management experience. Specific requirements include:
  • Track record of expanding major donor giving programs and implementing effective donor engagement strategies. Priority given to applicants who have experience both developing and expanding individual giving.
  • Experience setting and implementing organizational strategy, with priority given to applicants who have experience of developing strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.
  • Experience effectively working with a very diverse set of stakeholders (consumers/young people, organizational leaders, funders, politicians, government officials).
  • Priority given to individuals with experience working with youth, advancing systems change and applying a race-equity lens to both day-to-day operations and organizational management.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and/or experience in public relations and marketing for nonprofits.
  • Demonstrated success managing nonprofit finances and human resources.
  • Experience coaching, growing, and managing a small but high performing team of staff
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
  • Advanced degree preferred, but not required.

About the Organization

DCAYA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a citywide coalition of more than 120 youth-serving organizations formed to foster policies, programs, and practices within the District of Columbia that promote and propel youth into productive and healthy adulthood. We accomplish this mission by crafting policy recommendations, providing structured advocacy opportunities for our members and allies, networking, and empowering youth. Specifically, DCAYA focuses on youth who struggle to access jobs, stable, housing, quality education, afterschool and summer learning programs, and other basic needs due to economic inequality, systemic racism, or other barriers.

Salary and Benefits

Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and other qualifications. Expected salary range is $100,000 – $115,000. We also offer a quality benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and PTO.
